Orquestra de Reciclados de Cateura (the Recycled Orchestra) is a youth orchestra based out of the community Bañado Sur near the Cateura landfill in Paraguay, a landfill from which they get the supplies to build their orchestra instruments out of trash. Favio Chavez, the inspirational leader, founder, and conductor, had the desire to help children with limited resources who lacked access to musical instruments. Don Cola, who has access to the landfill to collect these recyclable materials for musical instruments, brings materials to luthier Don Tito Romero, who then crafts instruments in his workshop. Some instruments from the orchestra are featured in an exhibit at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix, Arizona. |
